A view from......... Trainee Engineer, Lewis Adams

The first of our "A view from....." series, we ask our Trainee Engineer, Lewis Adams how he finds working at Chapman Bathurst.

What are you doing currently?I’m currently sitting A2 maths, 3 days a week at Langley Park School for boys and also on a work experience placement for 2 days a week.

Why did you want to come to Chapman Bathurst? I am interested in engineering and searched for a company where I felt I could fulfil my ambitions and achieve a good level of experience in a working environment and all that it encompasses. I felt that this would help me refine my interests in engineering and my future career.

What are your hobbies? Playing football for a Sunday League team, playing Golf, exercising and socialising.

What have you learnt since beginning your work experience at Chapman Bathurst? I’ve learnt to obey the alarm clock! Adjusting to the working day, the commute into London and time management have been good learning experiences. I have learnt to juggle studying, work and socialising!

How has your work experience shaped your future career plans? Through my practical experience across the different disciplines of the practice, I have been able to work on numerous projects and get a feel for how each discipline runs / works and the types of projects they undertake. Some of these include:

Environmental Engineering Services:
I have learnt TAS & SAP simulation software to measure building efficiency. I have created a library database of technical data for easy reference and access.
Facilities Management:
How maintenance contractors are monitored through the use of audits.
How to undertake an audit.
With the FM team I have had the opportunity to go to different sites, meet our Clients, Facilities Managers and Estates Facilities Staff to understand their requirements.
Networking/ Public Relations:
I have attended company networking events such as The Worshipful Company of Plumbers Lecture & Dinner at the Royal College of Physicians.

What are your future plans? I feel that I have become more motivated this year as I can see where I want to go in the future. I would like to secure a place at University to complete my BEng and have the opportunity to gain more work experience during the holiday periods. Then I would like to complete an MSc, through day release at LSBU whilst working full time and finally, to work my way up the ladder to Senior Engineer level and beyond.

Chapman Bathurst are sponsoring Lewis through his degree, where on his successful completion, will be guaranteed a place with the practice as Graduate Engineer.
